A couple days ago, news was spreading that US Airways put in a bid for the merger of the bankrupt Delta Air Lines. The bid is for $8 billion, and would be a hostile takeover. From keeping a close eye on passenger air carriers (and all of the issues they have been having with profits and threats of terrorism), I found this new really interesting. I also thought that showing Delta's hub in Atlanta would make a perfect map image!
The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta international Airport is the busiest airport in the world for flight volume and passenger traffic. Last year, it had 980,197 takeoffs and 88.4 million passengers. Wow! Earlier this year, construction was completed on a new runway. This is the 5th runway that the airport has. I have never been at this airport, but I would love to see the actual size of it. I would have to guess that it is enormous to handle that many passengers and flights every year.
